First thing I started with was the basement because it had four-foot of water in it. And that was a kitchen, and that was bedrooms and a little living room, all up there. Q: Can you tell me about the ghost in that house? When I was over there looking at their house. And I took that room and made it into the dining room. Burke: Well, a good example is the one right here at the end of the street. And where to get the good buys, and all that kind of thing. Im gonna go look. He did so much work for you. Sure, Id no idea of ever owning his house because I had a beautiful big house in Tottenvillebig French style house. I had a dream thatin my dream, I woke up and I was laying in bed upstairs, and I could smell lilacs. You dont have to worry about, sleeping on your couches and all that kind of stuff, and, you know, pulling out fake beds, and that kind of stuff. And I said to the real estate lady, I said, Well, how do you know theres a ghost in there? She said, Because the old lady that originally lived in the house. I loved Alaska. Q: Right. And right there in front of the windows was a coffin with all the flowers around it and everything. The Secret Service, as well as a Cohasset school accounting specialist and the superintendent, are determining how much the operation cost the town. And how people went along with them, I dont know either. Burke: Of course, Id been in Alaska for all that time. So that was over in Port Richmondits still there, I understand, the store. And here was the street. So because it was done like the French did, I never had to pay tax, or only tax on a two-story house, instead of a three-story. Daller: Well he formed that, thats the board. She lived up on Lighthouse Hill. And I studied architecture and the history of design and everything, I know all that. Burke: So that should pretty well cover it, I think. And I had to have somebody upstairs, standing on the stairs, and told me when to stop jacking, when the stairs got level, because the stairs were like this. And there was a whole other floor, another story, and its built with the French style, in the French mansard. What is a shame is some of the mansionsthe really, really ornate mansions that were torn down. Burke: So then I gave it to the Historic House Trust of New York. Thats the usual setup, I think, for historic houses. Burke: No, who gave me that? And people were selling anything out of their house to support themselves and live. Everybody had left, and Bess and Marge were there, and Bess said to me, George, sit down. Find your ancestry info and recent death notices for relatives and friends. And Bill moved in, and he stayed there for quite a while. Burke: I used to, but I didnt I didnt keep it on everything. All these walls used to be white. I know everything, what to do. So by the time he came back, all this had changed. But they hadnt been there, maybe five, six years, and I guess they decided, Oh! But they tore the house down to build that school. With that old fabric, theres enough to make drapes for one window. But when I die, they say theyre going to make a museum out of it. Q: Your collection of the items that you bought from Mrs. Murphy. In fact, he was just a few years older than I, and wasnt it last year we were trying to locate him? They tore down those two nice little cottages that were there. Kathleen graduated from St. Peter's Girls High School in 1962. Of course, when I bought the house, that was all weeds growing up among the bricks. It was so overgrown in the front yard and everything. And as you see it today was from me doing all those little things. Q: And so all these items went upwalked up the stairs and were, carried back down the stairs. And she was laying with her arms, like that. But anyway, she said, No, Im not going in. Finally, I think his wife got sick with that lung disease, didnt she? . And she couldntthey couldnt keep up with it anymore. So thats my uncles hope for it as well. And I looked back, you could hardly see the house. Burke: But anyway, when my time was up in the service, they shipped me back here to, Burke: Alaska, and I stayed in Alaska. And a couple of my friends came as bartenders for me. Its empty. They gave me the fabric and they did it and such. And now the people that I sold it to, the Pistillis [James and Kathleen Pistilli], they had the whole thing researched and now its got landmark things on it and everything. You know, everybody grew up together. They cant do anything. And I always used to say, Wonder who lives there! and so forth and so on. Burke: Well, look at the mansion! And he did the big sofa in there, didnt he? And then when they decided thatthey owned a beautiful house on one of the Keys in Florida. You werent on Staten Island. Obituary George W. And I never got along with her that much because everything I wanted to do, she said, No, no, no, I dont like that. And when youd come down, there wasthe stairwell come down, and it was a double parlor, like this, and where this door was, was with two double doors. Burke: Yes. And youd walk out, and the porch was all brick, and at the end of the porch was a big arch that had little windows in it and a French door where you could walk out to the garden. Q: And you said that you restored the garden there too? [laughs] And I lived there for a long time. Utica. It was unbelievably gorgeous. You want to take down every statue thats been there for a thousand years because, No, that statue shouldnt be there. So dont worry about it. Ghost in the houseif shes gonna live there, she could do some cleaning up, do some dusting. Burke: Yes. Q: No, that covers it! I moved in the house, and I would come in the house, and right in the front hallway, you could always smell lilacs. Burke: I think, what was left of it, the sons moved to California and they opened up a Scalamandr in California. And Ill see to it that, financially, things work out for the two of us. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic House Trust. And we were great friends. And he kept up with him, up until the time Mario passed away. Wed go down through the junk yards and whatnot. Daller: What about the coat? Would you sell me the acres in the front? And when I seen it all over there, and when I seen the British people were poor as church mice, they were selling everything. Probably. When they shipped me back from where I was, where the Eskimos were, they sent me back to the base, because they were shipping everybody now, backafter your time was up, you had to go back because you couldnt stay any longer than two years, and after two years, you had to come back to the States. Daller: And that house was beautiful. And I was in the medical department, worked in the operating room. You come out and take over the boys and mens department in the store. I said, Thats fine. And, I had a lot of time over there in London and so I decided, Well, hell, Im going to go to school and learn something. So I took interior design. Take a walk. I said, No, no, Im gonna save this house. He said, Oh! What was her name? And the house across the street from it, the Old [Sir Walter] Tyrrell House. And the kitchen was outside. But it looked like an attic with the roof like that and everything. Isnt that a huge house theyre building, you told me? And then of course, being in New York and being in the thing like that, I got to be very, very good friends, with Scalamandr. Burke: It was. Sell the other half to Billthat was my brother and you and George, move with me to Florida. So we all thought that was a great idea. And there was a big flight of stairs that went across the big porch across the front of the house, posts. And they were going to pay for everything if they owned it. Troy. I said I was the only person at that timemy uncle gave me my sweet sixteen there, and all my friends were invited to come formal. And that was only one of them. STATEN ISLAND, NY 10309. Burke: Yes. Im getting rid of everything. He said, I have three of the most beautiful Persian carpets from Persia, said, You cant get them anymore. He said, Theyre antiques but they are brand new, never used. He said, Im giving them to you. And this is them. I bought those buildings. So I found this big beautiful, French, mansard roof, big Victorian house in Tottenville. And then the Historic House Trust will use it as well to understand whats important to you about maintaining the house. Is there anything, you think? Burke: So I did that [sold the Tidewater Inn]. Okay. Q: Is there somebody in particular that you work with for reupholstery or restorations? Burke: Okay. Burke: About the candle? There was nine of us in the whole family. So that makes sense. So we brought that point up a few times. They couldnt handle it, the clientele that came in. And thats what I did. But before we know it, there wont be a thing left in the house. Burke: I think that waswhod ya call-it got me involved with that. Yes, and I had bought the house, but I couldnt have the house and move in until she died. And I want my painting. Tell me when you want me to start. He painted that for me. Q: Can you tell me about moving the collections here, out of storage and out of your sisters houses into this house? I know all the grounds that were around it were beautiful gardens. Because the other way, my uncle was digging into whatever a little bit of savings he had, in order to pay. Burke: And what is a shame islike, you take [one of our former boarders], she has two horses that she used to keep here all the time. Come here, Marge. I said, What? They said, Sell this goddamn place. And the porch went all like this, around the house. And a lot of it got given away, got lost. I think there were hundreds of people that worked there. They tear down one house and build five. I dont know, Im just used to it. And I had a beautiful restaurant and a bar connected to it. And I often wondered what happened to that brooch because I gave it to Bess. But it only reached a certain point of it, not in the very beginning. And that went for years. And I never had timesometimes Id be sleeping on the pool table there because I just couldnt leave! Born in the Province of Pola, Italy, "George" settled in the Bronx. And then when we realized we were broke, all my brothers joined the military, got married, moved away. Daller: It just went right out of my head! One day, he was gone. So I moved into the front parlor room, there. And I loved it. Unbelievable. And then when you could see the house, it was a goddamn mess. Architectural style and interior style? But the one that I remember was a great big brooch. The mayor and everybody else in the cityyou cant ride on the beach. And what they did is they bought a whole fleet of old taxis. The Seguine Mansion, also known as The Seguine-Burke Mansion, is located on Lemon Creek near the southern shore of Staten Island. If you were at the water looking up here, you couldnt see the house. And on top of that, I still worked for Sherwin Williams. And, you know, who has that!? Did quite well. I mean, I could do a little woodwork, but I wasnt a carpenter. She said shell keep the doors locked and call Linda if anybody wants to get in and take anything out. And then, where they built the schoolwhat is that girls school up here? He worked by himself. It was gorgeous and very ornatewas very, very much like Greek Revival. Burke: He did almost all the upholstery in the house. Daller: Then you got rid of thatbut those are the early days. I was born right in the hospital across the street, and grew up 90% of my time on Staten Island until I became old enough and I joined the military. Burke: Well, I knew how to do it. Burke: Yes, he did that little sofa there. Well work it out, one way or another. And so the two of us started and we madecalled it the Old Bermuda Inn because John loved Bermuda and he was putting a lot of money in it. I cant think ofdoesnt matter, the name of the people. I was born on Oct. 11, 1930, one of nine siblings, to an. Q: Yes. He says, Hes my good friend, and so on, We live on Staten Island. And I got to know a tremendous amount of people that way. Id bring her bottles of whiskey and shed say, Listen, George, Im going to an estate for saleeverything in it is going! So its saved forever. And I finally got to meet Mrs. Seguine because she had stables at that time. And I said, well, Im going to retire. And one day, I was sitting in the dining room. That whole salon set there was a Victorian salon setand the couch is a camelback. I bet I left the cellar door open under the stairwell, from the basement, and I bet thats the soap Ive got in the washing machine that smells like that. So they said, You better get back here and do something. So I came back, got out of the military, got a job working for Saks Fifth Avenue. I was seventeen years with the Air Force. My mother and his wife never got along too well. Would you just sell me two acres there? Burke: Well, I hope it gets maintained. Then I decided, well, Im going to get myself a nice apartment. And they said he had the box, and took it with them. Before he left, the house was fine. You got to get out. So we moved to Florida. And theyd come out and Id get involved with them. He said, What in the hell youre buying this old piece of shit for? He said, Is it insured? I said, Yes, I took big insurance on it. He said, Good. So I stayed there, worked for him for years. The stables were here for years. Burke: But everything will stay here exactly as it is, because if its going to be a museum, people are not going to come in and look at empty walls. Its just a shame. And I got these. Daller: He did the sofa upstairs as well. I think hes given you a great history of what started and, basically, youve talked about his life from the beginning, so, I dont know. The Seguine girls, as they were called,. And that makes more sense to people when they see something. Ive been to the Tenement Museum, and I love the fact that theres a woman on a loop and she discusses living in the apartment. That house, it was a big French mansard, big Victorian. And then I said, well, now Im going to buy a home. Because look how long the war went, and England had nothing. But the story that was cuteremember the lady in England, the antique dealer, that used to bring her bottles all the time? And finally, we met with John Krawchuk, when he became in office. What was I? So, thats it, I said, to hell with it. And I dream that I heard some noise. And I decided, well, Im going to pick up some nice buildings. Burke: I never lived in a little small house, I have no idea. That was a shame. And I know everythingId love to go out to Staten Island. So he said, Good.
